Prejudices fade, warm connections are made
The “Stichting Havenstraat” serves dinners to refugees, with and without status, and people from Amsterdam (Amsterdammers) in the clubhouse of ‘De Amstel’, the so-called “Havendiners”.
Since November 2015, volunteers have been organising a Harbour Dinner every Monday for 80 refugees and 20 to 30 guests of the evening's sponsor. Meijers traditionally brings a large group of employees.
The dinners take place every Monday evening (except during the summer holidays) — and they are truly needed! Never before have there been so many refugees in Amsterdam. That’s why there are over 40 Haven Dinners each year.
The Haven Dinners are uplifting evenings where refugees (asylum seekers or Ukrainians) and Amsterdammers meet in an informal setting, with dishes from around the world and sometimes a program for children. After dinner, the refugees dance traditional Ukrainian, Syrian, Iraqi, Afghan, Kurdish, and Eritrean dances. The Amsterdammers try to join in.
For the Amsterdammers, the refugees transform in one evening from numbers into people. Prejudices fade, connections are made.
At the end of the night, everyone goes home fulfilled, joyful, enriched, and just a little more connected.
Once a year, Meijers supports the weekly Harbour Dinner for refugees and Amsterdam residents. We care deeply about the fate of people who find themselves in difficult circumstances.
